PayNet And AWS Celebrate Success Of First Program Akar Graduates | BusinessToday

Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), celebrated the graduation of the inaugural cohort of Program Akar powered by AWS re/Start, a groundbreaking initiative designed to equip future leaders with essential cloud skills for Malaysia’s Financial Services Industry (FSI).

Launched in 2024, the programme started with 100 students, with the first cohort of 50 successfully completing their training in July. Graduates received AWS Cloud Practitioner Certifications, focused training in Digital Payments, and mentorship to secure future roles in their target companies. The next cohort is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

Farhan Ahmad, GCEO of PayNet, emphasised the collaborative efforts that made the programme a success, saying that the multi-stakeholder approach is crucial in preparing talent for the evolving needs of the FSI and driving Malaysia’s digital future.

“We aim to expand our network of stakeholders to continue preparing talent for roles in cloud computing, AI, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity,” said Jun Maria Tan Abdullah, Senior Director of PayNet Akar. “However, technical skills alone are insufficient; attributes like aspiration, agility, self-direction, and relationship-building are equally vital.”

The initiative saw support from several key partners, including World Education Placement Services (WEPS), which ensured the curriculum met industry demands, and Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), which provided educational backing. Students also gained practical experience through internships with major FSI organisations, including PayNet, Bank Negara Malaysia, Maybank, Public Bank, and others.
